About the International Gorilla Conservation Programme (IGCP)
The International Gorilla Conservation Programme (IGCP) is a regional conservation initiative dedicated to securing the long-term survival of the endangered mountain gorilla while promoting sustainable livelihoods for communities living near protected areas.
IGCP is a coalition of three internationally recognized conservation organizations:
Conservation International (CI)
Fauna & Flora
WWF
The programme operates across the three countries that share the habitat of mountain gorillas:
Rwanda
Uganda
Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
Working closely with protected area authorities, local governments, community organizations, research institutions, and development partners, IGCP promotes conservation approaches that benefit both biodiversity and local communities.
The organization believes that successful conservation depends on active community participation, improved livelihoods, and responsible management of natural resources.
Position Overview
The Community Conservation Intern will support the implementation of community conservation initiatives around Volcanoes National Park. The successful candidate will assist in planning activities, conducting field monitoring, supporting community-based organizations, collecting project data, and contributing to project reporting.
This internship is designed to provide recent graduates with valuable practical experience while helping strengthen conservation activities that improve both biodiversity protection and community well-being.
Working under the supervision of the Project Officer, the intern will collaborate with various stakeholders, including local communities, Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), conservation practitioners, and development partners.
Why This Internship Matters
Community conservation has become one of the most effective approaches to protecting endangered wildlife while improving people's livelihoods. Instead of focusing only on wildlife protection, modern conservation recognizes the important role local communities play in preserving natural ecosystems.
Through this internship, you will gain practical exposure to:
Community development
Conservation project implementation
Environmental sustainability
Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E)
Project planning
Proposal development

Assist in Project Planning
The intern will participate in developing project proposals, preparing implementation plans, and supporting programme staff during planning meetings. This provides valuable experience in project design and development.

Regular visits will be made to community projects funded by IGCP. During these visits, the intern will monitor implementation progress, identify challenges, and provide technical recommendations to improve project performance.
Support Monitoring and Evaluation Activities
The intern will assist in collecting field data required for the organization's Monitoring and Evaluation framework. Accurate data collection supports evidence-based decision-making and project reporting.

Many reports prepared by Community-Based Organizations require translation into English. The intern will support this process to improve communication between local communities and programme management.
Support Community-Based Organizations
