Job Purpose

The OHS Section Leader will oversee the implementation of occupational health and safety policies, procedures, and programs within Rutongo Mines Ltd. The role involves ensuring compliance with safety standards, reducing workplace risks, investigating incidents, and promoting a strong safety culture among employees and contractors.

Main Responsibilities

1. Occupational Health and Safety Reporting

The OHS Section Leader will:

Establish effective systems for collecting and managing workplace safety information.

Analyze safety data and prepare accurate reports for management.

Ensure timely submission of required safety reports.

Maintain proper documentation related to occupational health and safety activities.

2. Accident Investigation and Corrective Measures

Key duties include:

Leading investigations of workplace incidents, injuries, and high-risk events.

Identifying causes of accidents and recommending preventive solutions.

Tracking corrective actions until completion.

Ensuring investigations follow company safety procedures.

Supporting employees through investigation trainings 

3. Safety Training and Employee Awareness

The successful applicant will:

Develop and conduct occupational health and safety training.

Support employee induction programs.

Train workers and contractors on safety policies and procedures.

Promote hazard identification and risk prevention.

Provide safety coaching during field operations.

4. Promoting Safety Culture

Responsibilities include:

Encouraging employees to report unsafe conditions.

Supporting teamwork in improving workplace safety.

Promoting accountability for safety performance.

Developing systems that encourage safe working practices.

5. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Management

The OHS Section Leader will:

Monitor PPE selection, distribution, and usage.

Ensure workers follow PPE requirements.

Verify compliance with safety standards.

Promote proper protection practices at work sites.

6. Risk Management

The position holder will:

Develop and maintain occupational risk management systems.

Update the company safety risk register.

Support implementation of risk control measures.

Ensure mining activities are conducted safely.

7. SHECS Committee Coordination

The candidate will:

Lead SHECS committee meetings.

Record and maintain meeting minutes.

Present safety performance updates.

Follow up on safety ipprovement actions.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must have one of the following qualifications:

Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) with at least 3 years of relevant experience in any industry; or

Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Mining Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.

For candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering:

NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) is required.

At least 3 years of mining industry experience is required.
